1) Beginner

From scratch my aim is to get you "playing" as soon as possible. You will learn the right way to strum and change chords. When you can strum through one song correctly you can strum through millions. Everything you ever do on a guitar will relate back to this most basic of guitar skills, so learning to do it properly is the most vital stepping stone to more advanced playing.

Click  speaker to listen to the sort of thing we will be aiming for

Both guitar parts here are played by me, on a beginner’s Nylon String Guitar.  Your target will be to master the skills required to perform the strum heard in your left speaker (See Students’ Performances page to hear a beginner’s rendition after 2 weeks and realise what can be achieved.)

To get you to this stage we will use a variety of tools to monitor your progress, the end result being your own CD recording made along with a song of your choice.

Note: To see the method involved in reaching the point where you can play, you may like to take a look at my  6 week investigation into re-learning the guitar left handed from scratch, which I undertook in the summer of 2008.  While using this method as a general guideline, we’ll also take in the basics of lead guitar playing (how to knock out a few famous riffs), fingerpicking, and understanding tablature amongst other things.

At the point you can confidently strum through a complete song you will have a good understanding of rhythmic skills and basic left and right hand technique.  With strong foundations is place you will be ready to build on top and start introducing some more advanced techniques.

My expectation is to help you accomplish this in 6 (50 minute) lessons or under, and with a keen student is usually done by lesson 4.  Be aware that I have seen (many) instances where people have “played” a guitar for over 20 years and never mastered this basic skill.  Imagine a footballer who never learned to trap a ball, or a builder who never learned the correct way to mix cement!

At the point where you have made a satisfactory (mechanically correct) recording, you will have a solid grounding to move in the musical direction you desire.  A key focus of my job is making the music you enjoy accessible as quickly as possible, ie. translating it into a form you can understand and learn to perform.

I don’t mind what music you want to learn, but whatever it is, you will be taught in a manner that you will get better at it .. Fast!

Learning the guitar is all about taking what seems impossible, getting it to a stage where it feels achievable, and steadily working toward making it feel easy. Anyone can do this, to any level they want, with a combination of desire, commitment, patience and naturally, good instruction.
