Students’ Performances
An important part of progressing as a guitarist or any musician is putting your playing to the test in a performance situation. I like to record students regularly to putting them in a position similar to a public performance. With the extra pressure of a microphone on them, anything that can go wrong will go wrong, but they have to keep going until the end.
We’ll generally only do this with things that are fairly solid, though it can be a useful exercise to demonstrate that something a student thought was strong actually is flawed at some level.
By comparing current performance with past, cast iron progress is clear to see, so this is a great way to measure your advancement as a player.
Here are a few notable recordings made in the last few months.
Learning the guitar is all about taking what seems impossible, getting it to a stage where it feels achievable, and steadily working toward making it feel easy. Anyone can do this, to any level they want, with a combination of desire, commitment, patience and naturally, good instruction.

Hey Jude
This recording was made 2 weeks to the day from the first time the lady involved had held a guitar. After borrowing one of my guitars for her first lesson she bought a beginner’s classical and 14 days later amazed us both by comfortably strumming through this 3 chord sequence.
Shift and Spin
Sometimes it’s nice to just make a recording for its own sake. This is a recent take from one of my older students, and one of my favourites, a cover of a song written by Ewan McVicar.
Enter Sandman
A fast learner who hadn’t been playing long when I first met him in December 2009 now exhibiting confidence and ease on a few things which took some work at first to deal with.
Comfortably Numb
Some students just need a bit of a nag and a push in the right direction. I’m never sure how much this teenager appreciates my emphasis on the nuts and bolts of improvement but hopefully some of it rubs off.
This came out well for an impromptu recording, 14 year old ”Tommy Gun” in the left speaker and me trying to get in tune on the right.
He’s come a long way since he was a 9 year old battling with his first string bends!
